What | Why | The Golf Fitness Program | Golf and Your Spine | How to Get Started

Why is a golf fitness program necessary?

Butch Harmon (former Tiger Woods coach) endorses MedX and says…

"Athletic training is essential. Golfers looking for the competitive edge take physical training seriously."

Your upper body comprises a large part of your body weight and has as its only support your spine. Your spine comprises 24 vertebrae that have between them discs that act like cushions to absorb pressure and keep the bones from rubbing against each other. The vertebrae are held together by ligaments, which connect bones to bones. There are also tendons that connect the many tiny (paraspinal) muscles to the vertebrae. These muscles support the spine and provide for movement of the spine.

When any part of the spine is injured (including a disk, ligament, bones or muscles), the muscles automatically go into spasm to reduce movement in the area. Moreover, just like any other muscle in the body, if the spinal muscles are not exercised regularly and properly, they will weaken and eventually become painful.

Clearly therefore, because one's golf swing revolves around the spine, golfers are very susceptible to back injuries which are more specific to the spinal muscles, hence the need to keep your spinal muscles "fit".

Studies also show that strengthening and stretching increase club-head speed, enhance joint flexibility, improve lean body composition and reduce blood pressure.

The Goals of a Proper Golf Fitness Program

  • To strengthen the spinal muscles and
    reduce the risk of injury
  • To increase the mobility of the spine
  • Increase the range of motion allowing for a
greater arc in the golf swing
